Overview

It is important for you to obtain and read the official job announcement. This document describes the job, pay range, and selection process. It also includes other important information such as the application deadline, materials you must submit, the type of examination being given, and the date and time of the examination.


Your completed application and additional materials must arrive in the Office of Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. on the deadline date listed on the job announcement.

Job Category Descriptions:

* Internal Only – Open only to City employees with or without promotional rights.
* Internships - Contact the listed department for details.
* Open Opportunities - Open to any applicant who meets the listed job requirements.
* Internal Promotional Opportunities - Open only to current, certified City employees who have accrued promotional rights.  Check with your Payroll Specialist.
* Temporary - Positions hired to complete short-term assignments such as summer jobs.
* Transfers and Additional Opportunities - Includes transfers between departments or other government agencies, and appointed (non-certified) positions.

* If you have previously applied using the Online Job Application, you can save/edit your profile information making it easy to apply for jobs with the City of Saint Paul. Access your online job application profile now.
* The job announcement explains the type of exam and process for each posting.
* Applicants will be mailed test results.
* Future vacancies are filled from the eligible list created from all qualified candidates who pass the exam.  The list typically lasts for one year.
* The hiring department receives the names of the top candidates.  See Civil Service Rules for details.
* If score is pass/fail, the names of all candidates are forwarded to the hiring department.
